City: Los Angeles, born and bred
Age: 36

For how long have you been working in the industry?

I went to makeup school when I was 22 and it took me about 5 years after that to really break into the industry via assistant work. And then years after that to start really getting my own jobs.

How do you stay sane during those days?

Staying sane during the early years is all about staying focused on your hustle, just keeping a one track mind. And trusting that all the work you're putting in will come together and pay off some day.

What's your favorite Sweed product(s) and why?

My favorite Sweed product is ABSOLUTELY the Pro Lash Lift Mascara. It’s the BEST! I love the formula, it’s like a rich black shiny patent leather almost. It glides on so well and the brush makes it super easy to get the entire lash from the base to the tip. I’m such a fan. I also constantly use all the liners!

Kristines favorite products: Lash Lift Mascara & Eye Silk Kohl Pencils

What's your best beauty trick/hack?

I feel like my best beauty trick is truly listening to someone and what they want. It helps me enhance their beauty without going too overboard. I love the less is more approach. And at the end of the day I want my client to be happy and feel really good.

If you were a beauty product, what would you be?

If I were a beauty product I’d be a tinted moisturizer because it’s so versatile and gives a healthy, youthful glow while also providing sun protection and yummy ingredients. Who doesn’t want all of that wrapped up in a pretty package?? If I'm being honest it's a drug store favorite of mine that I use all the time. It's called BB Fresh by Maybelline and it's just my tried and true! So much bang for your buck!

Kristine would be a tinted moisturizer from Maybelline if she was a beauty product

When was the last time you were nervous when you did makeup? (I mean you do so many celebrities and the whole vibe must be overwhelming with so many people watching your work.)

I still get nervous on big jobs because it’s so important to me to make everyone happy and a lot of the time is something that is going to live forever. Whether on film or in a magazine and you want desperately to be able to look back and feel proud of what you did. And for other people to as well!

How long time does it take for you to create a red carpet look?

Red carpet looks are always super collaborative. You have the whole team kind of swapping ideas and giving input and so the glam process can take a bit because there’s a lot of moving parts. I’d say my part alone probably takes a full hour and half, but were all working at the same time, because I want it to be perfect. All the way from skin prep to the final touches on the highlights and lips and all the good stuff.

What's your favourite foundation for red carpet?

My favorite foundation for Red Carpet is kind of dependent on the skin of the person I’m doing but a couple of my favs are: Armani’s Luminous silk, Chanel’s Vitalumier and Shishedo Synchro Skin Radiant Lifting. Also anything and everything by Clé de Peau.

You are a beauty hero for so many. What's your beauty motto in life?

My motto in life is "never complain, never explain". Do YOU and try to be unafraid. Life is so short. I’m still working on it too!!

Interview: Tobi Henney

Her work has been seen on the red carpet and at the MET Gala. With her signature glow and modern, effortless aesthetic, she captures the essence of contemporary beauty. HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED AS A MAKEUP ARTIST? “I've been a makeup artist now for 16 years and I've worked internationally for about the last 10 years.” WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE SWEED PRODUCTS? AND WHY? WHERE ARE YOU BASED? “I'm currently based in the US and I work all over the world actually. I'm often flown to Europe and I was flown back to my home country of Australia last year for a job, but I honestly am open to clients booking me anywhere right now and I'm just really enjoying all the opportunities that come my way.” FAVORITE MAKEUP LOOK? "I just got back from Paris Fashion Week and one of my favourite looks that I created was on Barbara Palvin for the Balenciaga show and it was a beautiful metallic brown liner look, and I know there's a shade called Golden Beetle in the Sweed line and you can use it to recreate the look." FAVORITE BEAUTY HACK? “My favourite beauty hack is to create glass-like skin, and by doing that you really wanna create hydrated base and then you want to dust over the foundation. Just very thinly and then you can really just press the product into the skin and the skin will look supernatural and glowing and gorgeous. And I feel like when your skin looks amazing and glass-like, everything else is going to follow.“ TIPS FOR MAKEUP LOOKS ON MATURE SKIN? “So I have a lot of mature age clients, everything from 40s to 80s, and I really like to keep the blush super high on the face. And I try and create like a triangle shape, so just on the top here, across the cheekbone and then up into the temple, and what that does is it really lifts the face and it gives a more youthful appearance.” ANY ADVICES FOR ASPIRING MAKEUP ARTISTS? "If you're an aspiring makeup artist now the. Internet is the best way to get your work across to people from all different countries and different age groups. So I highly recommend collaborating with other creatives and creating beautiful content that you're really proud of and practising. Practise makes perfect, and trying to work on different skin tones, different skin types, different age groups. And I actually got the best practise from working on weddings because when you're working on weddings, you have to do all different types of skin and you're under pressure, you have to work quite fast and it can be highly stressful, and once you get those practises under under your belt, then you can really become a very skilled and experienced makeup artist."     Shop Tobi's favorites Sweed products here.
